The Simple Present

The simple present is used when something is always or generally true; facts or habbits.

Example: Water boils at hundred degrees.

With I, you, we, they ----> the whole verb

With She/He/It (shit) ----> verb +s

Vraag: is het tegenwoordige tijd?

                                                                                                      Ja                                               Nee

Feit of gewoonte?                                               Geen present simple or continuous

                                                                 Ja                                   Nee

Negative sentence in the Simple Present

Negative sentences are normally made with the verb to do

(The exceptions are for: to be, can, might, should, would)

I, you, we, they  --> Do not (Don't)

She, he, it --> Does not (Doesn't)

Don't/ doesn't is placed between the subject and the verb

Example: I don't like reading, She doesn't play the piano.

(I and she are examples of a subject. Like and play are examples of verbs).

Questions in the Simple Present

To turn a sentence into a yes/ no question you can use 'to do' or 'to be'.

If there is a form of 'to be' in the sentence you use this to form a question (like in the examples below).

I am an athlete       --> Am I an athlete?

You are seventeen --> Are you seventeen?

He is a sweet guy --> Is he a sweet guy?

If there is no form of 'to be' in the sentence you use 'to do' to form a question.

Pay special attention to the 'She/He/ It' form --> do becomes does and the 's' at the end of the verb disappears.

I walk home --> Do I walk home?

We bake cookies --> Do we bake cookies?

She plays the violin --> Does she play the violin?
